An examination of the high-purity quartz sand industry's structure, purity standard, technological obstacles and application scope(1)
In general, quartz sand with a SiO2 level more than 99.9% is referred to as high-purity quartz sand. It is chosen, refined, and extracted from natural crystals such as granite quartz, quartz sandstone, vein quartz, and so on. Excellent chemical stability, strong insulation and voltage resistance, and a very low volume expansion coefficient are characteristics of high-purity quartz sand. Strategic rising sectors including new material, energy conservation, environmental protection, and information technology are among those that employ it extensively. The world's leading nations are increasingly using the creation of strategic emerging industries as a means of taking control of the next wave of economic and technical advancement.
High-purity quartz sand is nearly devoid of metallic ions such as iron, titanium, chromium, zirconium, lithium, potassium, sodium, and inclusion hydroxyl groups. It also has very strict criteria for the purity of SiO2. Semiconductors are the largest users of quartz material itself, with optical communications and solar photovoltaics following closely behind. Solar photovoltaics is the main growth at the moment.
The primary method of processing and purifying high-purity quartz sand was from crystal. But since the turn of the century, the world—including China—has started using quartz ore to produce high-purity quartz sand and achieve full industrial production, given the scarcity and high cost of crystal. The three steps of the purification process—pretreatment, physical treatment, and chemical treatment—can be summed up from a technological standpoint by employing various mineral processing methods such as crushing, grinding, screening, magnetic separation, pickling(acid washing), chlorination calcination and so on. However, considering the differences in technical levels and processes, the quality of products of different companies varies greatly. There are very few companies that can eliminate impurities to the extreme and stably produce 4N-grade quartz sand. There are only three leading companies in the world can complete this task.
